The Benefits of KicKee Pants Bamboo Fabric
About Bamboo Fabric
Natural bamboo fabric is gentle to both your baby and the earth. Bamboo is a sustainable plant that grows incredibly fast, at a rate of nearly three feet per day, and needs little water. Because it regenerates so quickly, pesticides do not need to be used in bamboo cultivation.
Clothing made with bamboo is soft to the touch and comfortable for kids to move and play in. Unlike outdated notions of what eco-friendly clothing looks like, today’s clothing made with bamboo looks adorable, comes in a variety of styles, and is machine washable. Bamboo clothing is breathable, lightweight, and hypoallergenic. It’s gentle enough for babies with sensitive skin, including those with EB, the fragile skin disorder.
Organic Certifications
With so much information, and disinformation available, it’s easy to be confused and overwhelmed about the best way to keep your child healthy. It’s important to know that bamboo clothing manufactured responsibly is perfectly safe for you and your baby. Look for clothing brands that label, announce, or otherwise proudly proclaim their organic certifications and status. Some independent certifications to look for are the OCIA (The Organic Crop Improvement Association), the OEKO-TEX® 1000 certification for production sites, and the OEKO-TEX® 100 for products. Many different countries have their own organic certification labels, but the OEKO-TEX® 100 is an international certification that guarantees that fiber is free from chemicals and poses no health threat to the wearer. Chemicals are used in the process of creating bamboo fiber from the plant stalk, but with the proper certifications you can be sure that none of these chemicals remain in the finished product. You should also look for companies that use environmentally friendly dyes for their clothes and bamboo products, or choose undyed natural items.
KicKee Pants Bamboo Fabric
Nick Cloke is the founder and CEO of KicKee Pants, a children’s clothing company that uses bamboo derived fibers extensively. They control the production of their own fabric to ensure that the factories they use maintain their environmental certifications. Companies and factories that use a closed loop process in their bamboo fiber production are better for the environment. Closed loop means that any chemicals used do not escape into the atmosphere, but rather are recaptured and recycled for use again. In the case of KicKee Pants, sodium hydroxide is used to soften the bamboo chips into pulp, and it is not released into the environment. Sodium hydroxide is on the GOTS organic approved list and is used in many organic cotton lines as a softener.
KicKee Pants only uses bamboo that is 100% certified organic. It is produced under the most eco-friendly conditions currently available for bamboo production. Their bamboo fiber production company tracks the bamboo from farm to final sale to KicKee Pants, so they can certify 100% of it.
Bamboo is a healthy, safe alternative to cotton, and an excellent choice for your little one. In addition to clothing, bamboo blankets, rugs, and furniture are also great options for your baby’s nursery. Just remember to look for the proper independent organic certifications and find brands that you know and trust.
